Notes

On March 4th, 2022, Jerome Froese released this compilation album as part of his 'Edition J' series as download only, thus no physical media of this release do exist so far. The digital cover artwork does not show any artist name, though the download was released under the moniker 'Jerome Froese & Tangerine Dream'. The 'Edition J' includes the albums listed below:

For the major part, the album consists of material from live concerts, soundchecks or pre-concert jam sessions; additonally there are some studio rehearsals of compositions which have previously been released as live versions only.

Jerome Froese about the release"On Stage Right Stage Left you will find a small retrospective of my stage activities in association with Tangerine Dream, as well as a few tracks from off stage. In this respect I have listened through many old recordings to find the best ones for a release. In the end you could have filled several CDs with this material, so Stage Right Stage Left should at least give you an impression of what has been lying around in my archives for so long. The few songs that have already been released were at least remastered (just like all the other material)."

This album features three tracks from the following releases:

The remaining 16 tracks have been previously unreleased. The liner notes on the Bandcamp web page for this release shed some light on the origin of those tracks, below is a roundup in chronological order:

  • Four tracks were recorded during the 1990 UK tour: Three Bikes In The Sky (track 14) comes from one of the two gigs at the London Hammersmith Odeon (either Oct 26th or 27th). Electric Lion (track 5) is a soundboard recording from the Manchester gig, featuring keyboards by all three band members; unlike the studio version, this one has no guitars. Stage Left (track 11) was recorded during the same tour, though the exact venue of this recording is unknown. Notably, this composition has been previously unreleased, but unfortunately the second part of it (featuring Edgar's solo) is missing. The Back Of Beyond (track 12) was performed as encore at the Newcastle gig.

  • Two Bunch Palms (track 16) and 220 Volt (track 17) are early studio versions of two tracks which were previously released as live versions only. Both feature just keyboards by Jerome Froese and are missing the guitar lead lines which were added later.

  • 220 Volt (track 6) and Homeless (track 10) are from studio rehearsal sessions, performed in preparation of the 1992 US tour. Both compositions have been previously released as live versions only.

  • Four tracks on the album were recorded during that 1992 tour: Graffiti Street (track 1) is a jam session by Edgar and Jerome, performed immediately before the shooting of the Three Phase video at the Seattle Paramount Theater. Jerome Froese: "On the guitar, I'm probably a little freaked out. Normally the lead guitar is played by Zlatko Perica here." Big City Dwarves (track 13) was performed as a one-time encore on the Denver gig of the tour. Backstreet Hero (track 18) and Purple Haze, as performed in Chicago and Detroit respectively, were both taken from bootleg recordings but have been remastered carefully by Jerome Froese to be included in this compilation.

  • Unlike the live version performed during the 1992 tour and the vocal studio version (released 1993, see above) the previously unreleased instrumental studio version of Dreamtime (track 4) features no sax, just keyboards by Jerome Froese and guitar by Zlatko Perica.

  • Stratosfear 95 (track 7) is taken from a studio rehearsal session, performed by Jerome Froese, Gerald Gradwohl and Mark Hornby in preparation for the 1996 London concert.

  • La Marche (track 8) was recorded on a solo concert by Jerome Froese in Gütersloh (Germany) in 2014 where the closing track was performed by the Loom line-up, that is Jerome Froese, Johannes Schmoelling and Robert Waters.

All tracks have been remastered in 2022 from the original tapes, computers or stereo master tapes.
