@steven Partington

In the eyes of US law and most other countries bootleg recordings are illegal to sell but that does not stop ebay sellers from making a buck when ever they can.

The Tangerine Tree/Leaves series was made by fans to be shared freely for two reasons. The first reason being the most obvious, to cover ones self from engaging in personal profit which could lead to leal hassles and the second reason is, well good karma.

I have all of the Tangerine Tree project but only have a hand full of the Leaves project. As to the quality of the concerts they vary from MP3 CBR-192/FLAC but the majority are in MP3 CBR-224. I would love to get a hold of the original SHN recordings and convert them to FLAC. I will be uploading the Trees in a couple of months to a private forum so I will have dowwnload links availble for those interested.

them om the RAH in london the last time.
I purchased the TD Trees some years ago and still have them i think there
are 82 cds all together.
I am writing to you because i was looking on ebay for TD stuff and came
across this person
counter_point_records www.ebay.co.uk

what he says our recordings that our now in the public domain.
It seems a bit unclear as to how he got them and i think may be illegal to
sell them still.
He sells them for 8.95 each and is certainly selling quite a few.
Just thought you would know about legality on this.

Tangerine Dream The Electronic Journey released 2010 10 disc
Tracks attributed to the TD album Transsiberia appear on several other discs yet don;t conform to the actual track list from the official TD release Transsiberia. 95% of the compositions on this 10 disc set are by Edgar Froese alone so this really isn't a TD project or genuinely representational of TD-it is representational of Edgar Froese's ongoing solo work. The distinction should be made. (Montreal Oct 2014)

Hello from "East of I-95", North Carolina, USA. I discovered TD on Nov. 9, 2012, beginning with a randomly purchased LP called Firestarter (bought with lots of other MCA titles). Since then, my interest in TD has been blossoming, and your web site has been a valuable resource in helping me discover new TD titles. Their music is both calming and energizing to me, and has been a great companion during lonely times. Currently listening to: "Panorphelia" by Edgar Froese.

Hi, just a comment on the fantastic Paris 1975 bootleg (http://www.voices-in-the-net.de/tangerine_tree_22.htm) - one of the reasons the sequencers sound so cool in this is because they are putting echo on them (probably tape echo), with the initial echo nearly as loud as the original signal, and syncopated with the sequencer time so the echoes bounce around in between the gaps - this creates cool new mesmerising patterns that sound much more complex that you get from just having an 8 or 16 step sequencer going on its own.
It's notable that Edgar really showcased this technique on 'Maroubra Bay' from his solo album that summer (Epsilon In Malaysian Pale) - so perhaps he suggested it to Chris Franke, or Chris was copying him... they rarely used it to the same extent elsewhere. (It is present to some extent on Phaedra and Rubycon, but the echo level is not so loud, so the you don't really get the same exciting effect where a whole new complex riff appears to form).

Re: "1975, October 04 Coventry Coventry Cathedral" - unless my ears very much deceive me, the 3rd piece from this set appears during the last 6 or 7 minutes of "Ricochet Part 2" - the complex descending sequencer lines are quite distinctive. The vast improvement in sound quality on Ricochet is almost enough to make one weep though - presumeably Tangerine Dream/Virgin have many many hours of gig recordings of this quality in their archives, which would make the Tangerine Tree/Leaves audience recordings totally redundant if only the archives could be opened!

Re: the "1974, October 13 West Berlin Nationalgalerie" - a track from this appears on the "Space is the Place" Tangerine Tree Vol.41 CD... this appears to be the earliest surviving live recording of the band to feature the Moog sequencer. Unfortunately the only copy I have heard, on YouTube, has been subjected to far too much Noise reduction (hiss removal) plug-in during remastering, and is consequently rather muffled sounding.
Overzealous or hamfisted use of noise reduction plugins seems to plague quite a few of the Tangerine Tree recordings, including those then used by Reactive for bonus discs on the pink years CDs.

re: "Tangerine Tree Volume 59: Essen 1968" - you express skepticism that this recording is Tangerine Dream at all. I would also express skepticism that it is from September 1968. My reason for saying this is that it part 1 contains sounds characteristic of the EMS Synthi (those "psheow!" zappy sounds)... but the Synthi VCS3 was not available kfor sale to the public until 1969! So it can't have been used at a gig in Essen in 1968!
The sound quality and style of echoed sounds is actually most similar to parts of "Atem" than anything else in the Tangerine Dream catalogue.

re: "Tangerine Leaves Volume 17: Les Ponts de Cé 1973" - I think this oneis notable in that it seems to be the earliest surviving live recording by the band to feature the mellotron! Part one (40 mins) consists mostly of minimalist organ drones/gliss guitar/synthi noises, initially making me think that this was going to be a rather dull concert (apologies to Zeit fans ... but Part 2 sees a lot of mellotron being played, and several passages and phrases are similar to material that appeared on the Atem album (which had been released a few months prior to this gig). There's a characteristic sputtering echoed synthi sound that also appears on title track of Atem.

Hi, sorry for all these guestbook entries, but I have been listening to vast amounts of Tangerine Dream recently - mostly guided by your excellent site
Regarded 'Tangerine Leaves Volume 36: Frankfurt 1971' - you have no notes for this yet. Whilst I have only heard this from YouTube, not from CD-R... the audio quality does seem pretty grotty for this one. I do think it's notable though, as being probably the last time that Tangerine Dream played the 'pyschedelic freakout' rock style on stage. The 40 minute concert starts out very much in their new minimalist Xenakis/Ligeti-inspired style which would soon appear on 'Zeit' (drones, pulses and note clusters on Farfisa organ, a few EMS Synthi twiddles, and Froese playing his 'gliss guitar' style). However by halfway through, Chris Franke has taken to his drum kit, and begins bashing and thrashing away (similar to his playing on 'Alpha Centauri;), whilst Froese lets rip on guitar with some distorted lead lines and Baumann soars away on his organ. Sadly the muffled grotty recording obscures just how loud, aggressive and dynamic this music would have been live in the venue. Anyone who had thought the minimalist drones were 'boring' to begin with would soon have been shaken out of their complacency

PS, the mellotron motif I mentioned below (that appears on Croydon 75.3 and Nottingham 76.2) is played through much more extensively and beautifully on York 75.3, the first five minutes. It's really nice (and suits an 8 second reverb time!)

Am 17.07.12 um 12:32 Uhr schrieb

Re: the Tangerine Leaves Volume 3: York 1975 recording... your notes describe it as "the sound quality is only average due to the poor sound quality and bad condition of the original tape". I have not heard what the original tape sound like, but I suspect a significant factor is the acoustic inside York Minster - the reverb time is about 8 seconds long in there! This means that all the short sounds (e.g. Chris Franke's sequencer patterns) tend to blur into a wash of continuous sound, making it hard to really hear the individual notes (as you have several seconds' worth of them all superimposed on top of each other). So, the recording may be quite an accurate capture of which the gig really sounded like in that respect

Here is another piece of minutiae you might wish to note
I realised today that the lovely mellotron coda at the end of "Croydon '75 Part 3" is basically the same as the coda of "Nottingham '76 Part 2"... in each case, all the sequencers stop, and they do about a minute and a half of lovely slow 3-note progression on the mellotron cello (?) sound.

On 5 May '12 I attended my first TD concert ever! That was an awesome gig in Padova (Padua, Italy) divided in two sets: 9:15 to 10:40 p.m. recent material / intermission / 11:05 to 00:25 (!!!) classic pieces such as excerpts from Ricochet, White Eagle and Stratosfear 1995.
I've listened to TD for more than 30 years but this was my first live gig: the crazy thing was I caught the TD lettering with the corner of my eye when I was inside a bus (!), then I found out the concert was to be held 10 days after my accidental glimpse. I see in the concert list of Voices in the Net that prior to this concert TD had last played in Italy in 1981... so now I feel somewhat to have entered history.
The Dream goes on!

Your site is so useful! Thank you!

I recently got a copy of the "Bootleg Box Vol.2", here are some things I noticed:

- "Monolight" from Live in Washington '77 (and also on the "Encore" album) most definately incorporates the main melody of "Stratosfear" and the piano coda of "Invisible Limits"

...they also jam the chords of the end of "Invisible Limits" on Part 2 of Live in Nottingham '76

"Monolith" on Live in Washington basically starts off with "3am At The Border of the Marsh From Okefenokee" before continuing to improvise for 20 minutes extra.

Regarding the recent Esoteric reissues of the 'pink years' albums:

Alpha Centauri: the Ultima Thule tracks and the Ossiach Live one are clearly taken from a copy of the respective vinyl, you can hear the needle scrufflings around in the groove as the record spins! So, I don't think it's really accurate to say this is the "very first official CD release" for these tracks! - as that would normally mean CD release from the master tapes - but this is just a (reasonably) clean copy from their vinyl! (Are you sure Ultima Thule 1 is a 'remix'? I can't really hear any obvious "new" elements)

Zeit: the Klangwald concert has been treated rather over-aggressively with a noise-reduction plugin, leading to rather obvious processing artefacts (digital gurgle wurgle noises)... your write up redacts the name of the person who did this noise reduction! It's a shame it couldn't have been done re-done professionally by Reactive from the original Belgian fan's cassette.

Regarding the 'Deutschelandhalle' concert from Nov'73 on Atem: I would say this is notable as being the first officially released appearance of the "Schulte Compact Phasing A" machine, which Froese can be heard using enthusiastically throught (and which also features very heavily on Phaedra... some other elements of the music also appear there in 'Movements of a Visionary')

Hallo Michael,
Ansonsten: einfach super!

Thanks, Bernd!

Just an information about "Alchymia". This is just a CD-R bootleg with a photoshopped cover that looks like it had been released by JIVE. It has not. It is just a fake.

CD-R bootlegs are not featured on the site. Any TD collector with Photoshop could create dozens of new CD-R bootlegs every day. There's no way to keep track of them.

Best regards

Dear Michael, I wanted to give you a huge "thank you" for all the hard work you have been providing for the last years, compiling so precisely so many detailed informations about TD, Edgar Froese and all the former members of TD. Your very user-friendly website have helped me more than a little bit recently during the writing of some long articles that I've made about the band and Edgar Froese for a French quarterly fanzine named Koid'9. I mentioned your website of course. I do appreciate your comments on the musical content of the albums themselves, reworked versions, etc. Keep up all this good work. Yours friendly. Marc

Hello,
I just ordered a CD titled "How Bodies Leave Ecstatic" from Ebay. It is not listed in the archives, so it must be new.Vic informs me that also released "Island of Fay" which also is not listed yet.

"How Bodies Leave Ecstatic" is by no means by TD. It's just wrong information on eBay -- if by purpose or by accident... who knows?

I'm the one who recorded the 1986 TD tour at Irvine Meadows, mistakenly said to have taken place at "Laguna Hills". It was first released as "Alien Air Music" with two different covers, then as "Sonambulistic Imagery" in the early 90s, then most recently as "Tangerine Tree 24."

All this hoopla has inspired me to go back digitally re-master the entire recording. This includes many tracks not found on any of the previous bootlegs, which are of much lower sound quality.

I'm curious as to what response people out there might have - drop me an e-mail.

I would like to point out that this surely as to be an earlier recording of what was to be become the album Tangram. As the themes are very identical especially the piano piece. I wonder if you had any thoughts on this, and have compared Quickshott with Tangram at all.

My first reaction was : dejection... you can see it in this pages a few days ago... but... was TD deserving such a website ? ...Michael, perhaps you have realized that you have gone to a lot of trouble to a more and more complicated band, with more and more re-releases, more and more re-remixes, more and more changes during all the years....until to lose its mind ! especially these last few years... I wonder what I am doing with all my TD collection now...

My hat off to you for taking on a gargantuan task in cross referencing all tangerine dreams compositions, let alone their numerous albums. Well done! I was saddened to hear of Florian Fricke's death a number of years ago. I learnt this just today after reviewing Popol Vuh's 'Tantric Songs/ Hosianna Mantra' at the Amazon website. I know that 'his music lives on' has become one of the more annoying cliches, but it's especially true of Florian, given the nature of his wonderful compositions. May his soul rest in peace (or perhaps continue to express itself elsewhere).

Exactly 30 years ago (end of March '74) I discovered Tangerine Dream by buying "Atem". This time I was a young schoolboy in Berlin-West/Germany and it was the starting point of the everlasting "love" to the music of TD. In June '76, shortly after leaving examination, I visited their fantasic concert in the Berlin Philharmonia. This concert is part of the "Bootleg Box Set - Vol. 1" and its great to hear this in original again - as a kind of materialised memory. ("Soundmill Navigator" - which refers to the same concert - is fantastic as well but with strong overdubs.)
In this way - your side is very informative and excellent. So - dream on!

The Bootleg Box Set Vol 1 is most welcome, especially as I saw the London and Croydon concerts back in '75.
The second piece from the Royal Albert Hall is one of the finest works TD have ever produced, in no small part due to Michael Hoenig's excellent work and it is utterly disgraceful that he receives no credit whatsoever in the box set package. The sleeve notes and packaging should have been a lot better. Paul Russell has made two errors:-
Phaedra was released in 1974 not 1973 and the Cyclone tour was 1978 not 1977.

I am a big fan of TD from Warren, Michigan (U.S.A). I was really disappointed, though, with the band cancelling the 2001 Dream Mixes Three tour in the states. No future concert was ever scheduled to date. I guess I understand.

Hi. I think you've forgotten "Horizon" off the tracklisting of the Journey Through A Burning Brain compilation... It should be at the end of Disk 2, ie, after Dolphin Dance.

Superb site! Thanks to google I came across your great site while looking for the covers of Froese's aqua and ypsilon in malaysian pale, the latter being definitely one of the best albums ever (probably together with Schulze's Wahnfried...) Thanks and keep on!

Great webpage, anyone who is seeing this, I'm looking for a song from the movie Legend that did not make the CD. The song plays when Lili first sees Jack then plays again when the fairy disguises herself as Lili. If someone has nayinformation f\regarding this, please e-mail me. I would greatly appreciate it

I've just bought inferno.
Yes it is a little bit heavy when you first listen to it but this improves with listening.
The choral bits were really good but i wasn't so keen on the vocals.
It's sounds like it was a labour of love so as great composers i say they do what they want

Back again with info regarding the 2CD set of Poland.
My track listings goes:
Poland - 22:36
Tangent - 19:59 (Including Rare Bird)
Rare Bird - 4:05 (NOT LISTED ON CD-COVER!!!!)
Barbakane - 13:55
Horizon 21:10
Rare Bird goes twice on this CD set. Thats how the playing time matches the full US-CD-rel....
The cover art, policies,CD-properties etc is an excact replica of the cover art of Jive's 'Extracts of Poland' (the 1CD set). The inlay card skips the facts that there are 2 CD's, and names the songs as #1-4 (leaving the single Rare Bird out from the Track list)
This should clear this matter...

Hi there.
Just browsing through the info about the different Poland releases.....I have the 2CD -84 rel. of Poland. The total running time of those albums are 81:45 (The US-CD is 81:48 - minor error, all CD-players doesn't compute the same time) My 2CD set of Poland is labeled Jive Electro CDHIP 22. This one shouldn't exist according to the listings on this site. Do I posess a pirate-ver? The inlay-card is exactly the same as the one in *Poland - 'Extracts of Poland - the Warsaw Concert* (CHIP 22), with the difference that Tangent is added to this set....

Hi folks! Great site, a very good site for fans and collectors of the best german group. I am 26 years old and tangerine dream fan since 1992, when I first heard my fatherŽs record "Stratosfear". Now IŽve got about 50 original TD-LPŽs and 80 CDŽs and this site is a very good help for me to become information about the group. Also thanks to all the other fanpages for their information.
Dream on...
