Notes

"So Einstein was wrong when he said, 'God does not play dice.'
Consideration of black holes suggests not only that god does play dice,
but that he sometimes confuses us by throwing them where they can't be seen."

- Stephen Hawking

"In honour and loving memory of Edgar Froese."

Quantum Gate is the first full-length studio album recorded by Tangerine Dream after band founder Edgar Froese had passed in January 2015. But with the exception of It Is Time To Leave When Everyone Is Dancing, all compositions are based on material Edgar Froese had already composed and recorded in preparation of this album in late 2014. Thorsten Quaeschning and Ulrich Schnauss are present both as composers and musicians on all tracks, while Hoshiko Yamane plays violin on only five of the nine tracks and has no composer credits.

One of the compositions, Genesis Of Precious Thoughts had already been released on Quantum Key as some kind of preview to this album, and another one, Proton Bonfire (itself a reworking of Electron Bonfire from Quantum Key as well) had already been performed live in 2016 and released on Live At The Philharmony Szczecin - Poland 2016. The remaining seven track are completely new.

The Quantum Gate Zoom-O-Graphic

The front cover artwork by Bianca Froese-Acquaye incorporates a stretched version of the Zoom-O-Graphic Ara In Motion by Edgar Froese.

Quantum Gate was released on CD at the same time by Eastgate in Germany (in a standard clear jewel case and a cover with gold lettering) and by Kscope in the UK (as a digipack). Apparently this resulted in a much better distribution of Quantum Gate than that of previous albums that had been released by Eastgate without support by a major label. Both CD version feature a 12 page booklet with the same content, but their layout differs regarding the front cover and the inner printed parts.

A short time later the album saw its vinyl release as a double album (with altered track order), again by both labels. Again, the front artwork as well as the layout of sleeves and labels differs between the German and UK releases. Last not least, both LP issues were pressed on vinyl of completely different colour.

The Eastgate Music Shop about the CD release"Tangerine Dream?s new studio album Quantum Gate is due for release on September 29th 2017, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the foundation of the band. In late summer 2014, Edgar Froese, Thorsten Quaeschning, Ulrich Schnauss and Hoshiko Yamane began to work on what was planned to be the first album of Tangerine Dream's Quantum Years -- a new phase of the band that Edgar wanted to use to introduce a couple of substantial changes.

Consisting of himself, long term collaborator Thorsten Quaeschning (synths and musical director), violinist Hoshiko Yamane and new member Ulrich Schnauss (synths), the Quantum Years promised an updated, contemporary take on the band's trademark sound of the 70s and 80s: sequencer-driven electronica covering a wide range of moods and atmospheres from ambient soundscapes to energetic, upbeat moments. Non-musical ideas relating to the field of quantum physics and philosophy had inspired Edgar to attempt a translation of these concepts into music.

Very sadly however Edgar passed away in early 2015 -- requesting that his wife, visual artist and TD's manager for the last 15 years, Bianca Froese-Acquaye would ensure that his vision for the Quantum Years would still be realized.

Throughout the last two years Quaeschning, Schnauss and Yamane therefore worked hard on achieving a result that would match Edgar's expectations -- as well as the ones of TD?s loyal fanbase.

It's worth noting that the compositions appearing on the album are not only based on theoretical concepts and ideas Edgar had outlined, but also on a large number of actual musical sketches that he luckily had already prepared during the initial phase of the band's reformation process.

Therefore, Quantum Gate is just as much a new beginning as it is a testament to Edgar's never-withering inspiration and ever-flowing creativity."

A short time after its CD release this album became available as MP3 download at the Tangerine Dream Download Shop as well.
