Notes

Announced since 1998, TDI released Soundmill Navigator in April 2000 as the second volume of their "Tangerine Dream Classics Edition". This series includes the following albums:

  • Sohoman (Recorded 1982, released 1999)
  • Soundmill Navigator (Recorded 1976, released 2000)
  • Antique Dreams (Recorded 1971-1988, released 2000)

Soundmill Navigator features live material that was recorded back in 1976 when TD played at the Berlin Philharmonics. Like Sohoman, this live recording has obviously been reworked adding new layers to the original sound, but this reworking is not mentioned in the CD booklet. In spite of this the sound quality of the recording is much less excellent than TD listeners are used to. Noise from the damaged 24 year old source tape could obviously not be removed during mastering. This resulted in a periodical scratching noise, ever changing from the left to the right stereo channel that makes listening to the CD via headphones rather annoying.

These facts made Soundmill Navigator to one of the TD releases most debated among fans. Some collectors gave this historic release a warm welcome, others complained that the CD does not feature the original, untouched music or that the sound quality could have been better.

The original, untouched concert (taken from a radio broadcast) has been fan-released as Tangerine Tree Volume 8: Berlin 1976 and later officially released as part of The Bootleg Box Set Vol. 1.
